Server 2003 loosing CALS

So you have somehow lost all CALs on windows server? here is the fix to restore your previous CALs

A runaway process on SBS2003 decided to fill up all the disk space on C: in the early hours of the morning. The fallout from this was the System log was corrupt and the SBS license data was reset to the default 5 CALs.
The System log was easy to fix – reboot the server.
The SBS license data was an absolute pain. I’d never run the “Back up licenses” utility in the Licensing section of Server Management. Microsoft have KB article 888818 discussing this, which is either re-enter the licenses, restore the C:\WINDOWS folder or restore a backup of the licenses.
The first wasn’t an option as I was offsite and the person with the key to the safe wasn’t in. The second was just not viable – why Microsoft couldn’t specify which file/folder needed restoring I don’t know. The third would have been OK if ever I had run it.
After much stuffing about I found that the SBS2003 licenses are kept in the licstr.cpa file in the WINDOWS\system32 folder. Thankfully, Microsoft actually keep an automatic backup of this in autolicstr.cpa. The simple process was to stop the License Logging Service, rename licstr.cpa to licstr.cpa.old, then copy autolicstr.cpa to licstr.cpa. After this I started License Logging Service and used Server Management to confirm that the licenses had been restored.

Well if you hear about hacking you also hear the term Social Engineering. The two are tied together like bread and butter and is why Kevin Mitnick got his title. Now sitting as head of Mitnick Security http://www.mitnicksecurity.com/ – he was once the Hacker of his time. How did he do it? Social Engineering EXPERT!
So I have learned over time hacking is really about 2 things:
1. Understanding Technology
2. Knowing how to deal with people to get what you want – this is the Social Engineering part

So now we live in a time where social networks are alive and doing well… I mean we got Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, watchyanameit….. what better time to implement “Social” skills when Social Media is all the hype.

So now think about this for a second? how could you use this to hack facebook accounts? twitter accounts? digg accounts? reddit accounts? …. Social Engineering by means of a Social Network site of course!

How? Well I cant tell you how… or EXACTLY what to do.. I mean I have never done such a thing personally. However I do know, if you create an account (a fake account) as a “fake person” and you get someone to add you as a friend that your trying to hack (or get info on) you have done a great job Social Engineering.. mining the data is the hacking part… So keep that in mind next time you get your next “Friends Request”. It could be nothing more than an EXPERT Social Engineer using Social Media as a tool to Hack your account

New Mac Trojan uncovered: “Boonana”

SecureMac and Intego, among other security firms, today alerted the Mac community to a new Trojan threat, trojan.osx.boonana.a (Intego gives it the name OSX/Koobface.a), which is spreading via social networking sites like Facebook and e-mail. The trojan appears as a link in messages with the subject “Is this you in this video?”, and when users click on the link, a Java applet downloads an installer, which modifies system files to bypass passwords and other protections.
Boonana affects both Mac OS X and Windows, and sets itself up to run invisibly in the background at next startup, allowing outside access to files. It periodicially checks in with servers and spreads itself via further spam messages. Mac users are advised to disable Java on their web browsers and avoid clicking email links that claim to point to videos.

Although this is not the first trojan for the Mac to take advantage of exploits in browser Java, this is a rare instance of one that works on both major platforms simultaneously.
